Headin' Home

Well... Here we are, in the Dublin airport. Upon arrival, we learned our flight from here to Chicago is delayed 1 hour. No worries... We've got a couple-hour+ layover there anyway. Fingers crossed they keep the delay to only an hour.

I have been thrilled (and amazed) with Cameron's ability to adjust to all involved with such a trip. (the boy can't walk thru a crowded street to save his life... lol... BUT). Anyway --- he's been great.

Wow!!!...

What an experience this has been! We've seen so much of this magnificent island, and yet there's so much we haven't even gotten close to. I don't think I've ever spent this much time away from home when the time went so quickly. I have so much enjoyed the time... here with Cameron, taking in the sites, taking it all in with him. The churches, cathedrals, castles, coastlines, scenic panoramas... it's all been fantastic. But I have to say...

For those of you who know me really (REALLY) well, I'm just an ol' softie at heart. And one thing that has always been among my favorite things is the sound of children singing. Over the years, Kim and I have had the pleasure of hearing our boys singing at various concerts, church events, etc. But here's something that always STILL catches me off guard... kids are kids... but for the past year, since Cameron started Elder and joined the Glee Club and Drama activities, I'm always caught off guard by how much I'm touched by even the sound of teenage boys singing. It's just something I can't explain. Now keep in mind, these are the same boys who smell up the busses BEYOND IMAGINATION... the same boys who (after all, they are teenagers) many are looking to get out of the hotels at night, break curfew... the same boys who spend egual amounts of time telling 'fart jokes' and checking themselves out in every passing shop-window (gosh, sounds like they're ALREADY well on their way to 'manhood'), etc. The ones looking to 'explore' the various towns, mind you, it's only a handful. But from what I'm hearing in the mornings, PLENTY of them have had quite the time while here. Boys... after all, i WAS one, some (many?) would argue I still AM one, and I've been blessed with five to raise. On this topic, I know of what I speak. That's not my point. My point is, no matter what the circumstances, no matter who is late, or bus sick, or suffering any other 'ailment' (I think that's hat they call it here... 'ailment')... when it comes time to perform, these guys NAIL IT. Every time. And every time, it has hit me right in the gut. From the AMAZING acoustics of St. Patrick's Cathedral to public performances in Galway's public square... they have been outstanding. And I can tell you this also... a few of the songs they have performed bring a tear to my eye. Every time. 'When Irish Eyes Are Smiling' in particular... I could name a few others, but that's not really the point. The point is, these kids (young men) have been great. AWESOME, really. And I'm a better person for having witnessed everything.

We finished today touring the Guiness Storehouse (see pic below). The boys performed yet another concert. And it was GREAT. As they paged through their songs (and of course they had to do 'Irish Eyes'... WHAT?!?, be QUIET!, have something in my eye! lol), I couldn't help but wonder what dad mightta been thinking. Probably something along the lines of 'Get home already.. you've spent enough money!' :) Kidding. I had the distinct feeling he was watching one of his grandsons belt 'em out in the grand room at the Guiness Storehouse, and smiling big (with his 'Irish Eyes'). Thought about you a bunch these past 12 days, Paulie. And smiled ever time.

Something else that I wasn't quite prepared for... I knew I would miss Kim and the other boys. But I had NO IDEA how much. Cameron & I have been gone a brief period of time... but we managed to miss Paxton learning his eye is completely healed, Duncan learning his baseball team made the City Tourney, Holden throwing a NO-HITTER, Griffin winning his game AND learning how to ties his own cleats (wow, the last Kelley boy to NOW no longer need help with his shoes... another milestone). And Kim... there's not another lady around who couldda 'run herd' on the brood with the ease and excellence you've delivered. Thank you. Really, I don't know what to say... but, Thank You (for everything).

Jeff Bradley (and hopefully Steve), please let Natalie know that we lit yet another candle in yet another Cathedral for her this morning in St. Mary's Cathedral. Told her earlier this week in a posting on her CarePage that we had her with us while over here... and we meant it. Please let her know. And we were also carrying around Natalie's cousin, Alexis. You both are incredible, and Jeff & Steve... please pass it on to those lovely young ladies. (hope to see you at Uncle Bill's in a week or so).

Kevin... you and I have exchanged some pretty entertaining msgs during this trip. Thanks for the levity and thanks for always being there. And, just remember, KEEP PADDLING!

Mom... you helped us get here. And you were right here with us the whole way, I promise. From the bottom of our hearts, thanks you.

To everyone else who's kept in touch, thanks. I was kinda thrown by how much I missed home. And hearing from you was a great boost.

Well folks, it's it's about 6:45 Dublin time. Dinner's at 7:30. From what I've heard, the 'farewell' dinner on these trips can be / is a real 'event'. But I was just chatting with a couple of our drivers down in the bar... who, by the way, have been amazing. Great guys, VERY knowledgeable, entertaining, and PATIENT! Anyway, they are ALWAYS the ones I find when I want to know what's REALY going on. They informed me that for a 9:30am departure, we'll likely be leaving the hotel at... wait for it, waaaaaaaiiiiit for it (can everyone imagine the smile on Cameron's face? LOLOLOLOL...) 5:30am. Yikes. I haven't slept past 5:30 the whole trip, but it's entirely a different thing to be at the doorstep ready to go AT 5:30am. Oh well... we'll be fine.

I'm rambling, and i know it. But that's mostly cuz I don't really want this to be over. I can't wait to be home, but still.... I'm sure you understand. We'll be on our way in the morning... and I'll put something up from one of the airports. Until then... have a great afternoon and evening, folks. And... I have had the time of my life!

Wrappin' It Up...

Dublin --- the boys sang mass @ St. Mary's Cathedral this morning. Then Cameron and I headed into town for lunch. We 'broke down' and opted for McDonalds. And it was YUMMY! Now we're on our way to the Guinness Storehouse (factory). The boys will give a concert there. A proud moment, indeed! LOL

I don't intend this to be our last update. But I'm also very unsure as to what the balance of the day holds. Right now, I'm trying to wrap my head around having to get Cameron up @ 5am or so. Gonna be a real procession to and thru the airport!

All for now, folks. Take care.

Almost Time To Come Home

Hey Everybody...

We're in Dublin tonight. And we've had another great (and exhausting) day. The highlight of the day was the boys singing a concert at St. Patrick's Cathedral. What a place! It was beautiful, and completely unlike any other church / cathedral I've ever seen.

We had two periods of 'free time' today... and boy did we take advantage of them. We walked (and walked and walked) all throughout Dublin. A sprawling city, with almost no skyline. In fact, I learned today there is only 1 building in the entire town more than ten stories tall. The ret of the city is a series of 'Georgian" flats, nothing is over 6 or so stories. But, as with several of the other towns we've visited, a very lively town with all kinds of live performances here, there and everywhere.

Great day in general.

A couple things I've learned while in Ireland...

1) I may simply be INCAPABLE of trying to cross a street with cars driving on the 'wrong' side without nearly getting KILLED
2) Boys, no matter who they are or who they've been raised by or who is looking after them at any given time, WILL BE BOYS
3) The Irish people are a lovely people and seem genuinely glad to have us (stupid) Americans as visitors (the 'stupid'... inside joke for Cameron and I)
4) The song 'Long Way to Tipperary' is NOT in fact about the city in Ireland. In war-time... the English soldiers would be out for 6 - 8 weeks at a time. Many of whom would die before the end of their first assignment. But for those who were fortunate enough, they would then return to London for 'leave'. There was a favorite house in the 'red light' district called 'The Tipperary', run by a woman FROM the real Tipperary. And that's how that song came to be... war-torn soldiers looking forward to leave (and, I guess, simply surviving).

I had a very nice experience tonight. Ya see, dinner along the way has been the boys eating together and the rest of those of us on the trip eating with one another. Which is fine. Most of the folks on this trip are friends with one another and it's always just a mix-n-match at dinner time. Me, personally... I've just been floating from table to table each passing night. It's been a way to get to know a lot of the folks on this trip. Well, tonight, I had already figured out who to eat with... and hadn't realized the boys weren't, in fact, all eating together... and as I was sitting down with my dinner companions I hear Cameron's voice... calling me to come sit with him. Maybe not a huge deal... and lord knows by dinner we've had more than enough of one another each day. But he may never know how much I appreciated him calling me over and offering me the chair he proudly announced he'd saved for me. Simple, I know. But those are the things that usually gettcha, ya know.

The boys sing mass tomorrow (where, I'm sorry, but I'm just not sure), and then will perform a concert at the Guinness Brewery (YAY!... lol). Tomorrow is our last day / night so I don't really know what to expect. All I know is before we hit the beds tomorrow night, we have to be packed and ready to go. We've got an insanely early wake-up and departure on Friday morning.

O.K. --- Cameron and I are gonna play some cards and call it a night. OOOOOOH! don't want to forget, many of you following along are also aware of Paxton's eye injury. Got word today as of this latest Dr. appointment, he is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT! And does not need to go back to the eye doc for ONE WHOLE YEAR. It's been a bit of a saga, but thank goodness he's fine and things ar lookin' good. Way to go, Pax!

Night folks... have a good one. We'll be putting something up for you tomorrow.

KelleyBoys RULE!!!

Hey folks, we started our day over here with some great pieces of news. Congratulations to Duncan... who shared he's learned that his baseball team has earned a spot in the City Baseball Tourney. Outstanding, Duncan... you guys deserve it. And you should be very proud of how GREAT you've done in a season where you broke your arm, then had to get thru NOT playing at all, and then having to get back in the groove. We're very proud of you, Buddy! And Congrats go out to Holden as well. His baseball team finished last night's game in only 4 innings... and Holden was awarded the game-ball for throwing a NO HITTER! Excellent stuff, Holden. So, sorry we missed it. Just means you're gonna need to do it again sometime. :)

We're off to see the city today, folks. I hope to keep you filled in throughout.

I Didn't Know That...

So, as I mentioned before, the we ate at the Merry Ploughboy this evening. This was an 'late game' addition to our schedule. I understood there was a lot of excitement about being able to go here, I just didn't really understand why. Ya see... the Merry Ploughboys are a world-travelled Irish Folk band. And this is their restraunt. Apparently, folks come here year-round to eat and hope to be here at a time when the band isn't traveling. Well, here we are, and here they were, and we end up with an evening at the Ploghboy. The band itself... very much fun. The video is a view of the front of the place and some of the Irish Dancers who performed as part of the show. Additionally, the boys sang at the end of the show. It was great. And, o yeah... the food was great too.

Today was (what else is new) very busy. As noted earlier, we saw several Castles. Travelled to and through three different towns, all the while making our way to Dublin. We're here tonight and the next few days. Hard to believe we are in our final destination of this trip. It's been magnificent. Once again folks, it's late, and I'm beat... so that's all for now. We'll get more up tomorrow. Take care, everybody.

Dinner this evening just outside of Dublin. Great pub (Ploughboy)... We've got the run of the place. Near 300 strong gets you that here and there. The boys are gonna sing with this band (shown in pic) after dinner. It's been another outstanding day!

Re: Below Posting

2 things... 1st) In my haste I forgot to mention Rock Cashel was where St. Patrick lived. Tres Cool. And 2nd... As many of you know what Stephen King fan I am, and given a number of his great stories were set in a Maine town called Castle Rock, I'm big enough geek to get a kick out of 'Rock Cashel (castle)' and 'Castle Rock'. Yep... different country, same dork. :)

WiFi!!!

Hey folks...

Greetings from Cork. Lovely weather here. In fact by the standards here, it's a regular heat wave. Low to mid 70s, sunny, blue sky and even kind of humid. Today was another great day/ Two main highlights as follows...

1) Blarney Castle --- yes, Cameron and I each kissed the Blarney Stone. And the Castle itself was too cool. It's the largest castle I've seen so far, and sits a HUGE amount of land. Oops, wait, forgot to mention, before we got to the Castle, we went for a horse & carriage ride thru Killarney City Park. Slightly different from our parks back home... this one's 50,000 acres. Needless to say, we saw but a bit of if. But the ride was great, the scenery terrific and we learned a ton from our guide. So from there we went to the Castle. The Castle was nothing short of magnificent. Scenery, history, just amazing. We spent three hours there. Exchanged a couple funny text messages with Kevin (brother) while there. And I will forever now recall Blarney Castle when he and I joke about things that have made us laugh for years already. Thanks, Kevin.

2) From the Castle we went to Cork (downtown). What a cool city. Very lively and all kinds of great scenery & architecture. Cameron & I shopped MANY various stores and then enjoyed some drinks at an outdoor streetside cafe. Cameron has begun running out of words to express how much fun he's having. And I'm getting there myself.

We (the WHOLE group) had dinner at the hotel and now Cameron and I are heading back down to the lounge. Big group gathering --- we do this in each town, and it's a blast.

Well folks, I'm exhausted. Gonna go. We'll be posting tomorrow. And thanks from those of you with whom I've been in touch. Makes me happy to know you're enjoying the updates. And, as much fun as I'm having, I'm beginning to miss home and it's great to here from you. Have a great night / day / whatever. More tomorrow.

Leaving Killarney...

Good Morning. Yesterday was terrific. We all headed out in shifts for the day to tavel the Ring of Kerry. Spectacular sights! What ya do... it's a driving route that encircles County Kerry. Very winding, up and down, and such. For much of the time you have the Atlantic and various landscapes to marvel at. Other times you're circling a series of beautiful lakes. We made LOTS of stops along the way --- lunch and scenic viewing. You know what a camera geek I am, so the numerous stops were to our liking. Thwy said we were doing the 'short' Ring because the 'long' Ring's road was closed in areas. We were at it for hours as it was, so I'm not sure what we couldda missed. It was awesome.

From there we drove in downtown Killarney where the boys performed a public concert at a shopping center. Again... Great show. And very much enjoyed by all. Must have been a couple hundred shoppers who stopped to enjoy as the took a break from whatever they had been doing. The days are so busy here... seems like ya blink and it's dinner time. After the concert we headed to the hotel and hung out. Cameron and I traded thrashings in cards. Dinner was great and then we closed the hotel lounge listening to some great music (performed by some local talent and helped thru-out by some of the boys).

We're off to Cork this morning. Blarney Castle is a stop along the way. This whole adventure has been so terrific so far... can't believe we've already been here a week! Have a great day, all. I'll be getting something posted throughout our day.

Good Morning

As promised here's update from yesterday. Using my phone (if this place has internet, I still can't get it o work in my room --- sooooo, using my phone and will be brief).

Getting out of Limerick was a great start to the day. We went to place called Rathbaun Farm. Started with a pretty light (and early) lunch. After, we toured the farm. It's an actual, functional sheep farm. Got to see the animals, watch a border collie herd sheep (much to my surprise that was very impressive). Watched 'em shear a sheep (again, cooler than I wouldda thought). The farmer gave us all kinds of great info / history. We were pretty-well hurried thru the place (guess they had work o do). From there we headed south o Killarney.

Killarney is one of the pretiest towns we've seen so far. The boys sang mass and gave a concert @ St. Mary's Cathedral. Biggest church I've ever been in. And it was packed! The mass was great, the boys sounded awesome... And MANY of the locals stayed for he concert afterward. The boys nailed it and the people were very pleased.

The evening was nice. Hung out in the lounge after dinner. And then Cameron and I played some cards back in the room to end another long and great day.

The weather... It hasn't been terrible the whole time we've been here. Partly to mostly cloudy, some rain here and there... But it's been fine. Even when it does rain, it seems to not rain hard and it passes very quickly. But yesterday... It was mostly sunny with bright blue sky pretty much the whole day. Outstanding!

Hope all is well back home with you all. We've got another full day in front of us (I've been 'coaxing' Cameron to get up and moving while typing this). Breakfast, and then we're off for more stuff. Another great day, I'm sure.

Happy Fathers Day to all thw dad's out there. More info later. Who knows... I may even figure out how to get the connection to work in our room by then. lol

Hello County Cork

We just stopped on our way to Killarney, just as we enterred County Cork. This scenic overlook (poorly shown in background of this pic) is called '40 Shades of Green'. From this point, you can see (and see and see) forever. And the many many plots of land are tons of various shades of --- you guessed it --- green. Hence the name.

Galway?... Again?!?

Mornin' folks. Ridin' the bus currently. Limerick is behind us and we're headed back up North toward Galway for another 'outing'. Once done there, we'll turn south again heading for Killarney. Couple things I've learned over the past day or so... 1) as beautiful everything else we've seen so far is, Limerick is NOT (acually glad to be outta there), and 2) over the years Kim and I have logged some serious miles with the five Kelley boys in tow... and I've always been under the impression a minivan with 7 people can get to smellin' pretty bad... well, after lots of hours on bus with FORTY folks (half of whom are teenage boys, many of whom seem to be enhusiastically embracing the European ways of 'bathing optional', and then toss in a few cases of bus-sickness... well, suffice to say, I kinda miss the 'rose garden' that is the Kelley van.
I hear it's hot back home abd there may be some storms. Good luck to Holden, Duncan, Paxton & Griffin... hope you guys get your games in today and that things go GREAT.
Well, Cameron's out like a light (didn't take long). Think I'll try the same 'til we get where we're goin'. More later. Until then, take care.

Hangin' In Limerick

Hello Folks...

We're in Limerick tonight. This has been a day to remember. It started off with a RIDICULOUSLY early wake-up call. But it was worth it. We travelled southwest, going through some very rural areas. Some pretty amazing sites. Stopped in a town named Burren. Along with it's beautiful scenery, however, sadly there was a LOT of pretty impoverished lookin' stuff. Farmers... with acres and acres of nothing but ROCK to farm. The landscape is near-treacherous. Yet these families have been there for generations. Makes one want to tell those folks to move. Oh well. The landscape was beautiful, and it all laid alongside the coast... so that made for some awesome scenery.
Next we went to The Cliffs of Moher. Gotta tell ya, we could leave for the states tomorrow, and my trip here would be complete. These were truly the most amazing natural wonders I've ever seen (they're likely the most amazing things I've ever witnessed, period). The picture posted here doesn't do them justice (used my phone... but fear not!... I got some FANTASTIC real pics). Just realize, while it's Cameron you see in the foreground, those are some of the cliffs in the background. And here's the KILLER... the cliffs behind Cameron in this pic are 600-700 feet tall. And they are NOT the biggest ones there. It's absolutely breathtaking. The SCOPE of what we were taking in was staggering.
From The Cliffs, we went to Bunratty Castle. The castle itself was something to see. We got to go inside, and it really was like a little time travel (as is so much of what we've seen so far). But... while I was expecting this stop on our trip to be just about the castle, the best parts of the stop came from everything else. There's a whole VERY old town there. Before spending a few hours poking around and seeing some more beautiful stuff, we started off having lunch in a little pub/restaurant place... there was live entertainment on a stage while we ate (traditional acoustic guitar, fiddle, accordian (SP?), singers and dancers. The food was GREAT... Irish Stew, bread, potatos, some excellent apple pie and ice cream, etc (times like these I'm REALLY happy I don't typically have to worry about weight gain... just another blessing for which I am grateful. But the best part came after... the boys were all invited up on stage and gave an impromptu concert. Very entertaining.
As I said, we're in Limerick this evening. And truth be told, I'm kind of glad this place is just serving as a 'lay-over'. Not much to do or see here, and frankly it's kinda 'blighted' looking. Everyone had dinner this evening. And then Cameron & I headed back to our room. We"ve got another busy day tomorrow. From here, we're heading toward Killarney. More on that later.
Take care, everybody.

Last Day In Galway

Hey Folks... it's been quite a full day. We started off with the boys singing mass in Galway Cathedral (sorry, referred to it incorrectly in previous post). The boys sounded amazing. The church was spectacular. What a great way to start the day. The video posted here... sorry for the quality, don't think less of the performance, blame me for not yet knowing how to work the vid-camera. Anyway, the boys were very warmly received by the Cathedral's priest as well as the patrons. It was INSPIRING.
After mass, Cameron and I grabbed some lunch. I was asked about the food here... and it's great! We had fish and 'chips' (that's fries to you, me and everyone else who lives anywhere but in the British Isles) last night. There are tons of great little 'hole in the wall' type places. And for those who just can't let go of home, you don't often have to look far to find a McDonalds. Today, we ate in a little coffee house called 'Coco Cafe'. We each had a KILLER turkey & brie cheese panini. YUM!
The rest of the day was spent by various groups within the whole venturing out to different activities. Some went horseback riding, others bike riding. Some golfed. Cameron and I opted to go boating on Galway Bay. It was pretty intense. Other boating 'events' had been cancelled due to gale-force winds. But for whatever reason, we were allowed to go out in our boats. They're called 'RIB's ('r'igid 'i'nflatable 'b'oats). Just picture something you've seen in the movies used by Navy Seals. Those little 'pontoon' looking rafts / boats. With VERY powerful motors. We tooled around... one boat of 6, another boat of 10. Our 'guides' drove us throughout the bay, showing us various things. All I know was is it was brutal. The surf was nuts, the water cold, and windy (hence the 'gale' warning). And despite the wet-suits they issued us before heading out (I should have known then... I mean, REALLY... full-blown WET SUITS?!?!?... yep, we were in for it). I've been whitewater rafting in Montana and didn't get as soaked as we were in the FIRST TWO MINUTES of this outing. But hey... may never get the chance again, so we went for it and had a blast.
Someone also asked how the boys were being 'received' by the locals. Well, when you get a group this big, dominated by teenage boys, and tour them around a foreign land, there's no way we're not gonna draw attention. A lot of peoples' eyes are caught. And plenty of smiles too. I have to admit, I've seen more than a couple glances that seem to say 'dumb Americans' as we're being assessed --- but hey, as the saying goes, it's an Elder thing and people just don't understand. On the whole, however, people here have been terrific. Very gracious. And considerate to the boys. It's been GREAT.
We leave Galway first thing in the morning and head to Limmerick. Along our way, we will be stopping at the Cliffs of Moher (which is among my top two or three MUST-SEES while here, so I'm pumped). I'll be checking back in tomorrow, so I hope you check back.

Settling In...

Today (which is really just a running-on extension of yesterday... I think), we touched-down in Dublin around 8:30am or so (Dublin time), spent a fair amount of time getting thru customs, getting luggage, etc. I've quickly had it impressed on me that there is no way that even CLOSELY resembles 'quick' when it comes to trying to coordinate anything involving 200+ people. But no problems. We then got a bus, headed to Galway. Stopped along the way in a town called Moate and grabbed some lunch. When we got checked-in @ Galway, we had an hour to kill and then went for a 'walking tour' of downtown Galway. Very cool, old town. See pic of Cameron --- we were by one of the lockes, and the weather was beginning to get very 'Ireland' on us. Again, no problems. Dinner this evening was great. Gonna sleep like a rock tonight. We have an early wake-up tomorrow and then it's on to a whole lotta stuff.
Great News for those of you who have been following along with the Paxton-Eye-Injury saga. Just got news from home, he had another appointment this afternoon and has BEEN CLEARED! There are things we need to do, and plenty of stuff to keep in mind as he 're-inserts' himself to an active life... but the great news (the only news that counts, really), we appear to now have the 'woods' in our rearview. Thanks to all who have inquired about him over the past week and a half. Keeping him in your thoughts, etc. BIG SMILES FOR THE GREAT NEWS!
More to come news-wise from the Emerald Isle. Be sure to check back. Be good, everybody.

Ready to go!

We said our goodbyes and made it thru security. All good so far. Here's Cameron... GEEKING... Showing his boarding passes. From here, just a quick hop to Chicago's O'Hare and then on to the Emerald Isle!

Finally... the BIG day!

Well, it's finally here. We all decided to make this trip happen about a year ago. And since then, Cameron has worked (and worked and worked) various events and occasions amassing money for the trip. Kim has also worked tirelessly --- manning a concession stand at US Bank Arena, to name just one thing she's done. And frankly, I couldn't possibly count / recall how many events she worked. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, Kim. I also want to thank everyone else who has contributed in any way to this trip. There are several of you out there, and you know who you are. Thanks very much. Truth be told, I'm not sure who's more excited --- Cameron or me. I do know I can't wait to experience this with my oldest son. On that note... the only 'less than great' thing about the whole trip... I've only been away from Kim and the other boys for 5 days at one time (twice... once for work, once for fun). And this trip better than doubles that duration. It's going to be very (VERY) strange, not starting the day with each of their faces / voices / etc. There's nobody who's more up to making it a seamless transition than Kim, so I take great comfort in that. And the boys themselves will be fine. I suspect they're gonna miss their big brother more than they are able to imagine or willing (LOL) to admit. But ours is a busy household, and once Cameron and I get out of everyone's way here, life here is going to proceed very much as is typical. As for Cameron & I, we have quite the busy 11-or-so days in front of us. Take care everybody. I'll be updating this page as regularly as possible, so check back.
